FAQ
How far do you travel for sessions?
I'm based in Plattsburgh, NY and will travel up to 15 miles one way at no extra charge.
If you’re further than 15 miles away, please contact me for specific travel availability and fees.
I love to travel to new places, so please don’t hesitate to ask.
Do you only photograph dogs?
While a majority of my clients are dogs, I love to photograph ALL animals! If you are the owner of a goat, rabbit or even an exotic animal, I'd love to meet them (:
When is the best time for pet photographs?
For outdoor photos, evening portraits an hour or two before sunset provide the best and most flattering light.
Where will my session take place?
Depending on your pet's breed, age and energy - we will choose something that works best for him/her. All sessions are provided outdoors and on-location. This means that I usually leave it up to the client to choose where they'd like to meet. I also have a few of my favorite locations to choose from if you are unsure.
For indoor animals, sessions will take place at your home most of the time. However, I've encountered owners with cats that like to go out for a walk. If this is your preference, I'd be more than happy to photograph him/her outside.
If you are booking a mini session or popup, these sessions will take place within the City of Plattsburgh limits only.
How should I prepare for my pet photography session?
For dogs, plan on taking a walk about an hour or two before your session. It can be helpful to practice some sit and stay commands a few days prior.
If you are getting dogs or cats groomed prior to the session, make sure you do so a few days before, as both a grooming appointment and a photo shoot in one day can be taxing on your furry friend.
Please also let me know of any issues your pet might have (such as aggression or anxiety) so I can be sensitive to their needs and keep them as calm and safe as possible during our session.
All pets should be up to date on their vaccinations and be currently on preventative flea and tick medications for the safety of my other clients.
What should I bring to my pet's photo shoot?
It's a great idea to bring a few of your pet's favorite toys and a good amount of water. Something that squeaks is a bonus!
You can bring treats, but I save this as a last resort because it can cause dogs to over salivate and lead to very slobbery photos!
I also suggest you bring plenty of patience and a calm attitude. These sessions can take time, and pets can sense when their owners are frustrated or tense.
I have more than two pets. Can I bring them too?
Once there are more than two pets, it increases the challenges of capturing the right moment as well as keeping things from getting chaotic. If you have more than 2 you'd like photographed, please add $25 per pet to the session total to allow for the extra shooting and editing time.
While I do not have a limit on the number of pets, I would prefer if you have four or more pets you'd liked photographed, please contact me and I'll provide a customized quote for you.
Can I be in the photos too?
Definitely! I love capturing the special bond between pet and owner. If you and/or your family would like to be in the photos with your pets, please indicate this in your online questionnaire when making your booking. I have a special package for pets with their humans!
What if my dog has to be on leash at all times?
That is not a problem! The majority of the dogs I work with need to be on-leash (either for safety reasons or following leash-laws). Whenever possible, I’ll remove the leash when editing your photos.
My dog doesn’t know how to sit and has a ton of energy, is that a problem?
While it’s great if your dog follows some commands, it’s not required. I’ve photographed many different personalities and behaviors through the years, and I always get some great images. And, honestly, I want your dog to be himself! You’re coming to me to capture the true spirit of your pets – not just perfect poses – so relax and let her personality shine!
What if the weather isn't cooperating on the day of my session?
You don’t need a perfect summer day to get great photographs! Overcast days provide really flattering light and other weather conditions can provide equally gorgeous results.
I do my best to avoid cancelling due to weather conditions and am prepared to work with almost anything. However, there are some scenarios in which taking photos is simply too uncomfortable (for both humans and pets), if not downright dangerous (i.e. excessive heat or cold, extreme winds, pouring rain). If the weather isn't agreeable on the day of the session, we will need to reschedule to the backup date chosen at time of booking.
What is the model release for?
A model release is a legal release typically signed by the subject of a photograph (in this case the owner of the pet) granting permission to publish the photographs in one form or another.
Do you retouch the photos?
I do! I go through each photo individually and adjust each image to match my style. Editing (color correction, toning and cropping) as well as retouching (removing blemishes, distracting background objects, leashes and some stray flyaway hairs) are done to every image presented in your gallery.
How do we get our photos?
After around 1-2 weeks after your session, I will email you with a link to your online gallery full of images I chose to be the best out of the bunch.
From there you are able to view, share to social media and download the high resolution files right to your device. Don't worry - the watermark is only visible in your online gallery and will not transfer with the download!
